The 60/30/10 Rule
So what is the 60/30/10 Rule?
This rule separates the colours into harmonious parts and creates balance between the various colours and shades in a particular colour scheme.
When designing the colour palette for a particular room using this approach you can distribute the colours as follows:
60% of the room should be your primary or dominant colour.
30% should be a secondary colour.
10% should be an accent colour.
SO HOW DO WE USE THE 60-30-10 RULE?
The 60% is the main colour used in your room, it’s like the background or the colour that dominates the space. When you walk in the room it’s what you will see the most.
The next rule is your 30%. It will become the secondary colour in your space this supports the primary colour, but creates a contrast enough to give the room interest. You'll basically be using using half as much of this colour as you did for your dominant colour.
The last rule is your 10%; your accent colour. It can be more daring or more subtle depending on the look you want to achieve. The 10% can be what gives the room personality or keeps it that much more neutral, it's really up to you.
The icing on the cake is the black or white formula. Adding some black or white details will give vivacity to your chosen colours. It helps bring these colour to life.
60% - Walls, floors, big furniture.
30% - Feature wall, window treatment, rug, small furniture.
10% - Artwork, cushions, decorative accessories.
