Choosing the correct rug size for your space…..

Ever wondered why sometimes when you look at a space and thought something isn’t quite right…… well it could be because the rug isn’t quite the right size.

Having the perfect size rug can also mean that your space is anchored. This means it’s got the right balance and the furniture has something to help connect it all together. There are often many elements in a room where having the right size rug allows all the items in a room to feel harmonious and linked together.

Here are some stats:

Standard Size Rugs:

Small – 160 x 230cm

Medium – 250 x 350cm

Large – 300 x 400cm

These are the three standard sizes which you will find in most stores. You can of course have a rug made to a custom size by some companies.

Now how to work out what size rug you need for your rooms.

Firstly the living room.

A good rule of thumb is the rug should be longer than your sofa or lounge and placed under it at least by a 1/3. Also if you have armchairs and a side table the width of the rug should includes these as well. Make sure you allow additional room between the chairs and the sofa when calculating this.

The front legs of your sofa should sit over the edge of your rug.

Dining room

When choosing a rug to place under your dining table it needs to be both longer and wider than what the table and chairs measure together when the chairs are pulled out. So you would need at least 60 to 70cm of rug on each side. This ensures it won’t obstruct the chairs being pulled out.

This would also apply to a round table and chairs on a round rug. A great option for under a table would be to choose a rug with a low pile.

Bedroom

There are a few different options as to rug placement under the bed but a good rule is to have the rug at least extend out 50cm from the edge of the bed or have two small rugs either side of the bed.

Something also worth thinking about is that the rug is in proportion to the width of the bed also referred to as the rule of thirds. Something also worth noting in a small room proportion of the room size is generally a better rule to follow than the size of the bed.
