Artist Profile - Helena McConochie……

What is Art?

The meaning of art – the definition by the Oxford Dictionary is:

‘Art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power’.

Art is a very personal thing. We all look at art differently and we like it for different reasons. Some reasons are more in-depth than others.

We might like the style whether it be abstract, landscapes, portraits, botanicals or still life. Or we simply like the colours used in the art work or how it makes us feel. We might also follow a certain artist and love the style they create.

As far as Interior design is concerned. It plays an enormous role in a families interiors as it can portray how the family are and what personalities they possess. Families can have art work in their homes to show case family history or to compliment their lifestyle.

Art work can also be used as a most important element in the design of a room as the focal point. As a designer creating the right focal point plays an essential role in a design and art work can often be that focal point in a space.

In this weeks blog I’m going to profile an artist who I have been following on Facebook and Instagram her name is Helena McConochie.

Helena is an accomplished artist both nationally and internationally. Helena’s work has been exhibited at the ‘Agora Gallery’ in New York in 2019 with the exhibition -  Fall Equinox: A collective Exhibition.

Helena paints quite breathtakingly large scale oil paintings of flowers, showcasing their amazing detail and colour.

Helena’s paintings are inspired by her 3 acre rural garden located in Dubbo in NSW. Helena also has a passion for macro photography. These photo’s giving her terrific close up images of these flowers and great scope for her work.

Helena uses careful brush strokes to create fine texture and lines that give amazing depth to the flowers. Light and shadow also play an important role in the paintings. Helena only uses a limited colour palette of white and three primary colours showing her unique talent in mixing these colours to natural hues, shades and tones. Creating light, shade and dimension producing amazingly realistic images.

Helena also draws inspiration from Dutch artist Jan van Vemeers as well as Henri Rosseau.

Helena and I have something in common as we both attended Wellington High School which seems to produce many creatives.
