Guide to Your Dream Kitchen Remodel….

Welcome to your ultimate kitchen remodeling guide. Here at Happy Home Interiors, I provide creative design ideas to help you bring your dream kitchen concept to life. I'll walk you through standard Australian kitchen dimensions and sizes and provide a comprehensive checklist to ensure you've considered every aspect of your new kitchen.

Standard Australian Kitchen Dimensions

When renovating your kitchen, working towards the standard Australian dimensions can enhance ergonomics and functionality. Here are some key measurements to consider:

Benchtop

The standard height of a kitchen benchtop is 900mm, but it can range from 850mm to 1000mm according to your stature. The standard depth is 600mm but ensure to match it with your fridge’s depth to avoid protrusion. Benchtops in Australia are commonly made of engineered stones or have a laminate finish. The average thickness of the latter is around 33mm, whereas engineered stone usually comes in 20mm or a multiple thereof. It is recommended a thickness of 40mm for engineered stone as it looks well-proportioned.

Island Bench

Galley kitchens with an island bench are still popular. If you plan to install one, make sure to allow for 1200mm between the kitchen row and the island bench. The size of your kitchen island bench can be as large as your space allows. Standard slab size is 3060mm by 1440mm. A good island width to work with is 1200mm, especially if you plan to place barstools on the other side. Allow for 300mm of legroom underneath the benchtop to sit comfortably and plan for a 1000mm walkway on either side of the island bench.

Fridge

The sizes of fridges vary significantly. For a single-door fridge, allow around 800mm width and 780mm depth. A double door fridge is around 1200mm wide and 850mm deep. Make sure to check the required ventilation space in the fridge's manual and incorporate it into your kitchen planning. Also plan for any plumbing required for a fridge that provides water/ice.

Oven

Whether you go for a wall or under bench oven, the standard width is 600mm. Larger options include 700mm and 900mm for large families and entertainment.

Overhead Cupboards

The clearance between the benchtop and overhead cupboards should be a minimum of 600mm. However, if you wish to install a gas cooktop, you need to allow for at least 650mm. Always read the manual of the cooktop and rangehood manufacturers and follow their instructions.

Dishwasher, Sink and Kickboards

Dishwashers and dish drawers are usually 600mm wide, but they also come in 450mm for an apartment or studio. Sinks come in all shapes and sizes, but for a double sink, allow for a length of around 800mm and a width of 480mm plus drainage area on the benchtop. The depth of the sink is around 200mm. For a single bowl sink, allow for a length of 550mm and a width of around 500mm. Kickboard height is usually between 90mm and 150mm and set back from the cabinet’s carcass by around 50mm.

Bins

These can be integrated into a cabinet or drawer - pull out style. Think about this beforehand allowing for general, recyling and green waste all in the one place is highly recommended. perhaps even a small pull-out drawer for your garbage bags and green waste bags.

Your Kitchen Remodel Checklist

Now that you're familiar with the standard dimensions, let's delve into the planning process. Here are some aspects to consider:

Kitchen Pain Points

Identify and list your top 3 kitchen pain points. This may include issues like lack of storage, small ineffective pantry, and so on. Understanding these will help in designing a kitchen that addresses these problems.

Do a Stock take

Do a stock take of your main items that will need to be stored. Such as glasses, plates, serving ware. This will help in planning adequate storage space.

Plus, any small appliances that will be used or stored.

Always consider power points.
